2025-07-29 Monthly Feature Story-July 2025(2)-Stay Safe in the Summer Heat! – How to Prevent Heatstroke

Living in Japan
To everyone spending the summer in Yokosuka:
Japanese summers are not only hot but also extremely humid, so it's important to be very careful about heatstroke. And right now, we're entering the most dangerous time of the year. According to data from the Japan Weather Association in 2024, the number of people transported by ambulance due to heatstroke during the two-week period from July 22 to August 4 was the highest of the year. One reason for this is the sudden rise in temperature after the end of the rainy season, while our bodies have not yet adjusted to the heat.

Tips to Prevent Heatstroke:
• Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty.
Sports drinks are especially recommended.
Note: Be cautious with caffeinated beverages like coffee, black tea, and green tea. They have a diuretic effect and can increase the risk of dehydration.
• Don’t forget to replenish salt and minerals.
In addition to sports drinks, foods like salted candy, watermelon, bananas, cucumbers, tomatoes, pickles, umeboshi (pickled plums), and even miso soup can help.
• Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day (10 AM to 3 PM), if possible.
If you need to be outside, wear a hat, use a parasol, and try to stay in the shade.
• Use air conditioning indoors to maintain a comfortable temperature.
Don’t underestimate the risk of heatstroke indoors, especially during humid nights.

⚠️ Early Symptoms of Heatstroke (Mild to Moderate):
If you notice any of the following signs, move to a cool place right away, cool your body, and hydrate with water and salt or minerals:
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Muscle cramps (especially in the legs)
• Excessive sweating
• Headache
• Nausea
