[This month's column] Chrysanthemums – Japan’s Autumn Flower

Chrysanthemums (kiku) are a symbol of autumn in Japan, with exhibitions held nationwide from October through November. Their elegant petals have made them a symbol of nobility.

They also carry deep meaning: the Imperial Family’s crest features a chrysanthemum, and the same motif appears on Japanese passports. On the other hand, chrysanthemums are commonly used as offerings at graves and Buddhist altars, so giving them as a gift to Japanese people is generally avoided.

Japan also has edible chrysanthemums: their yellow petals are used in ohitashi (lightly boiled vegetables with dashi-based sauce), vinegared dishes, tempura, or alongside sashimi.

Chrysanthemums in Japan are more than flowers—they embody tradition, culture, and cuisine.
