Column-June 2025 [Tsuyu, Japan's Rainy Season]

June in Japan: Discover the Beauty of Tsuyu, the Rainy Season
Did you know Japan has a unique rainy season called tsuyu (梅雨)? From early June to mid-July, the Kanto region—including Yokosuka—sees frequent showers and cloudy skies. But don’t worry, this season has its own charm!
In Japan, tsuyu marks the ripening of ume (plums)—a time for making plum wine (umeshu) and pickled plums (umeboshi). It’s also the best time to enjoy seasonal flowers like irises and hydrangeas, which bloom beautifully in the rain.
With a little preparation—like carrying a stylish umbrella or waterproof shoes—you can stay dry and enjoy the peaceful, reflective mood of the season. And if you’re craving clear skies, Hokkaido is just a short trip away and doesn’t experience tsuyu at all!
Learn more about Japan’s rainy season and how to make the most of it in this month’s column.
