What Is Tsuyu, Japan’s Rainy Season?
Japan has four distinct seasons, and nestled quietly between spring and summer is a unique weather phenomenon found only in Japan: the rainy season, known as “tsuyu” (梅雨).
Tsuyu usually begins in June and brings weeks of cloudy skies and frequent rain across much of the country. It starts earliest in Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost region, around mid-May. In the Kanto region, which includes Yokosuka, the rainy season typically lasts from early June through mid-July. Interestingly, Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido doesn’t experience tsuyu at all—a fun little piece of trivia!
There are several theories about the origin of the word tsuyu, but the most widely accepted is that it came from China. It refers to “the rain that falls when ume (plum梅) fruits ripen.” In fact, June is prime season in Japan for making traditional plum wine (umeshu, 梅酒) and pickled plums (umeboshi, 梅干し).
While long stretches of rainy days can sometimes dampen your spirits, there are many simple and creative ways to make the most of the season and stay comfortable.
1. Enjoy the Unique Scenery of the Rainy Season
June is the peak time for blooming irises and hydrangeas. Their petals, glistening with raindrops, create a tranquil beauty reminiscent of a traditional Japanese painting. These flowers offer a quiet, almost meditative experience—one that’s best appreciated on a rainy day.
2. Make the Most of Stylish, Functional Rain Gear
Today’s umbrellas, raincoats, and waterproof boots are both practical and fashionable. Try coordinating your rainy-day outfit for a little extra fun!
If you’re not used to carrying an umbrella, it’s a good idea to keep a compact one in your bag—just in case of a sudden downpour.
3. Take a Trip to Rain-Free Hokkaido
If your schedule allows, why not take a quick trip to Hokkaido? Since it doesn’t experience tsuyu, it can be a refreshing escape with clear skies and mild temperatures.
