Japanese Culture

At this season, you might see some bamboo grass (sasa) decorated with origami. It is a part of the Tanabata Festival, and we celebrate it on July 7th.

Tanabata has started based on the Chinese fairy tale. Orihime (princess) and the Hikoboshi (prince) fell in love, but they were so in love that they began to shirk their duties. Then the Lord got mad and separated them by the river, which is the same as the Milky Way (Amanogawa). July 7th is the only day that Orihime and Hikoboshi can meet.

This is why people write their wishes on the origami paper called “Tanzaku” and hang it on the bamboo trees on July 7th, the day wishes come true.
