2025-05-26 Yukata and Summer Events

Japanese Culture
Yukata is one of the Japanese summer symbols, along with fireworks and wind chimes.
It is often confused with Kimonos, but both are different in fabrics, wearing occasions, and way of dressing.
Kimonos are mainly worn as a formal dress for special occasions such as weddings and coming-of-age ceremonies. It is also worn on cultural occasions such as tea ceremonies and theater performances. On the other hand, Yukatas are made with thinner and airy fabrics, and are popular for summer clothes.
Since Yukata was originally made for bathing clothes, it has good breathability and is comfortable to wear on hot days. Now it is popular to wear for local summer festivals or fireworks display events as a fashion.

There are also Yukata for men, with darker and calmer colors. There are also separate versions of Yukata, which are called Jimbei. Jimbei is also popular for summer pyjamas, since it is comfortable and has good breathability.
FYI: Whale Shark is called Jimbei Same (shark) in Japanese, because the shark’s pattern is similar to Jimbei.

Yukata seems difficult to wear, but actually it is much easier compared to Kimonos. Also, you can adjust the hem length, so you can wear it for a long time. In fact, I still wear the Yukata I bought when I was in junior high!
Search for upcoming summer events and festivals around Yokosuka, and enjoy them wearing Yukata!!
